19 coaches gathered at the Umpqua Golf Course & RV Resort in Sutherlin for a rally in beautiful southern Oregon. These included Trekkies and Trekkers-at-heart. Terry and Lynne Baker brought their Alpha coach and we included them with fondness. There were three new or prospective Trek owners that joined the rally for all or part of the rally. Debby and Kerry Kliever had just purchased a 1997 Safari Trek and live in Sutherlin. Unfortunately they could only join us for the first night. Tom and Pat Wilhelm were new Trek owners and joined for their first rally. Hoppy and Kathy Hopkins were new from Baker City, Oregon. Others came from out of the area: Mal and Julie Towery came from San Luis Obispo, California. Wayne Vandergriff & Janna Caughran came from near Reno, Nevada. Paul Williams and Jane Ferri joined for us for the happy hour on Wednesday. They had an Airstream trailer that was destroyed by falling Redwood branch while on a trip from Connecticut to Alaska. They looked at all the Treks and are now considering one for them.
Rally started with a potluck dinner always a good thing. Umpqua Golf Resort is a very nice, tidy, and clean campground just off I-5 in Sutherlin. The weather was beautiful for the whole rally.
Tuesday was the busy rally day. Following a light breakfast, Trekkers headed to Wildlife Safari in Winston. Here the animals are free and the humans are caged. We rode in Safari trucks through the park. Half of the group fed a giraffe and the other half met George the elephant. Trekkers fed George carrots and were able to pet his trunk. We watched him paint a flower pot. Following lunch we were treated to an up-close encounter with a couple of cheetahs.
Upon our return to the campground Robert and Barbara Henderson presented a workshop on motorhome suspensions and brakes. We were fortunate to have the Henderson’s bring their Trek and spend the night with us.
Dinner was at Tollys in Oakland. This is an old-time soda fountain and special eating place in a historic old railroad town. The choices were prime rib, sautéed chicken, or grilled salmon. Everyone agreed it was a very special and delicious dinner.
Pancakes and sausages were on the menu for breakfast. Everyone had an opportunity to choose their own activities for the day. Some of the activities pursued included: returning to Oakland to visit the old stores and museum, touring wineries, golf, and kayaking the Umpqua River. It was a day of exploring and relaxing.
Dinner was a progressive dinner as groups of 3 couples shared appetizers, salads, and a main dish and visited coaches throughout the campground. Desert was ice cream Sundaes followed by a door prize drawing. John Turner had reported that he needed to have some work done at Hendersons and he just happened to win a gift certificate for work at Hendersons. A club meeting ended the evening. Rodger Wright was appointed as Rally Coordinator. It was announced that a 10th Anniversary Rally will be held at Mt. Hood Village in the fall of 2014.
The final day began with a breakfast of scrambled eggs and hash browns plus other breakfast goodies. Umpqua Golf Resort was very accommodating and appreciated hosting NWTFC for a rally. Manager Lonnie and assistant Cindy invited all Trekkers to come again.
